December 2007

Steve from UK will visit the project between 16 December 2007 & 7 January 2008. Please contact him via the project office in Siem Reap or call him direct on +44 7880 746232.

In addition to financial and organizational matters, one of the objectives of the visit is to plan the implementation of an 'Office and Business Skills' module into the curriculum for the older children in 2008. It is hoped that, if carefully implemented, this might over time substantially enhance the employment prospects for the oder children in the project, that they might become sufficiently skilled and confident to take advantage of the growing opportunities in Siem Reap town and the surrounding area over the next few years.

Steve is taking a high-def camcorder with him to the project, and will (technology permitting) post some video film, or links to same, on this site early in 2008.

Recent donors to the project include:

England Brothers, Stericom's neighbours in Chesham:

Daniel Nuderscher, Austrian photographer and artist visited and worked with HSPCCO in 2007 (see more further down this page).

Dani recently organized a large exhibition of his photographic work in Vienna for the benefit of HSPCCO. As a result, donations large and small were made by many different people to the project.

Take a look at Dani's really cool pictures of his travels in Asia:

Sapimed SpA of Alessandria, Italy, Stericom's European business partners in medical device manufacturing:

(Sapimed made a big donation early in 2007 & have pledged to continue their support in 2008)

and...

Sue and Conor Fleetwood of Dublin, Ireland (no website)

Thanks to all who have helped so much. 2008 looks bright!

June 2007

19 June 2007:
Andy completed the Triathlon in 5 hours 56 minutes and raised over GB£400 for the project (US$800).

Andy Cotterill

I will competing in the Ironman 70.3, held in Wimbleball, Exmoor on the 17th June this year. The Ironman 70.3 is a triathlon comprising of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile cycle race and a 13.1 mile run, a total distance of 70.3 miles, hence the name Ironman 70.3!! It is also referred to as the half iron man, as it is half the distance of the 'Ironman.' I am entering with my friend Jon Farley, we have been putting ourselves through an arduous training schedule since I returned from travelling in February this year. As part of our training we have competed in the Bruntwood and Crystal Palace triathlons (which we have used as build up events), finishing in the top third on both occasions. We are both confident of completing the Ironman 70.3, however we don't plan on breaking any records!!

I have chosen to raise sponsorship for the HSPCCO because I was so impressed with the work carried out by Samuth and his team. The free education that the HSPCCO provides, offers the opportunity for so many children to improve their future quality of life as well as instilling a respect for human rights at such a young age. After witnessing just how far a small amount of money can go, while I was teaching English at Pouk School with my girlfriend Alison last year, I know that any sponsorship I raise will help make a real difference.

Well thats all for now please wish me luck for the big day, I will update you all when its all over, letting you know where I finished and how much sponsorship was raised. If anyone would like any further information on the Ironman 70.3 please visit

or to speak to myself about the event, sponsorhip, or my experiences with HSPCCO please email me at

Andy and his partner Alison worked as volunteer teachers at Pouk School in November 2006 while they were travelling in SE Asia.

Alison the chef...

Well, according to Andy and Alison their time spent with HSPCCO was the most rewarding and memorable part of their time away travelling in Asia.

Andy is planning to do the Ironman Triathlon at Wimbleball, Exmoor on June 17, and has decided to donate all the sponsorship money he raises to the project.

Daniel Nuderscher
- April 2007

Daniel worked as a volunteer English teacher at Pouk School in March this year, and has submitted these pictures for the site:

It's not too clear on this reduced-size image, but the date on the white board is 30 March 2007.

Daniel is travelling in Asia and posting foto-images on his site:

Check it out - good pics and very professional site.

He has travelled up through Vietnam and Laos and is heading for Calcutta, having discovered on the way the rather agricultural qualities of the Minsk motorcycle.

Dani would like to return to the project next year and work with the kids again.

News: January-March 2007

Samuth's Eye Treatment Successful...

It transpires that he had a splinter of wood lodged in the cornea for the past 2 years. Now he can see he may soon be able to resume his work as a dentist, and contribute more locally-generated revenue to the project.

Computer at Pouk School

Pouk School acquired a computer and printer last month. Many of the children had never seen a computer close-up before, and almost none had ever used one. Now they want to be on it all the time. They are quick learners.

The laptop has battery back-up, as the electricity supply is so intermittent. Correspondence for the project can now be done on site for the first time.

No electrical power is available at the other 2 sites yet, and unlikely to be in the near future.

Angkor Wat School Site: land clearance...

This should help the project become more food self-sufficient next year. Surplus crops may be sold at the market for additional cash income.

Donors & Sponsorship

The latest sponsor for the project is Sapimed SpA

http://www.sapimed.com/

Sapimed are good friends of ours and have been Stericom’s number one supplier since 1999. Their generous contribution to the project will make a real difference. The kids are very appreciative, and with the other work now being done the future looks bright.

Work will continue at the existing sites and may be extended to other sites in the region

Thanks to all for your donations in 2007, small and not so small. Further donations always welcome. If anyone is planning a trip to Cambodia and would like to visit the project, please let me know.
